FA confirm Manchester United vs Man City referees as Erik ten Hag’s bad omen returns
The FA have confirmed that a change has been made to the Community Shield match officials as Manchester United face Manchester City at Wembley Stadium.
With Manchester United having finished their pre-season tour, Erik ten Hag‘s men have landed back in the United Kingdom as they look to finalise their preparations for the 2024/25 season.
The 2024 European Championships and Copa America meant that many key players, such as Lisandro Martínez, Bruno Fernandes, and Kobbie Mainoo, were not able to take part in pre-season, but they have now arrived at Carrington following their extended respective holidays.

Ahead of the start of the 2024/25 campaign, where United will face Fulham at Old Trafford on the Premier League’s opening day, they are gearing up to face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Community Shield on Saturday, 10 August.
While United and City had very different seasons in the Premier League, it was United who ran out as champions in the FA Cup, defeating their local rivals 2-1 in a fantastic win. The match referees for the tie have now been confirmed.
Confirmed officials
Jarred Gillett (pictured below) will referee on Saturday at Wembley Stadium. Gillett officiated four Manchester United fixtures last season. Due to a minor injury, he is replacing John Brooks, the original appointee.
Gillett officiated one of United’s most memorable fixtures last campaign—the brilliant 4-3 win over Wolves. He also refereed the 4-3 loss against Chelsea, a 4-0 loss against Crystal Palace, and a 3-1 loss against Brighton, making him somewhat of a bad omen for Ten Hag and his team.
Adrian Holmes and Nick Greenhalgh will be on the sidelines, acting as Gillett’s assistant referees during the game. Sam Barrott has been handed the fourth official job, separating Erik ten Hag and Pep Guardiola on Saturday afternoon.
Peter Bankes has been appointed the role of video assistant referee. Sian Massey-Ellis will act as assistant VAR, and Tim Robinson as support VAR.
