When Manchester United will play Barnsley as Carabao Cup draw confirmed
Manchester United will play Barnsley in the third round of the Carabao Cup as Erik ten Hag looks to reclaim his 2023 prize.
Manchester United were crowned Carabao Cup champions for the 2022/23 season after defeating Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley Stadium, marking Erik ten Hag‘s first trophy at Old Trafford.
However, in the following season, United suffered a 3-0 defeat to the same Newcastle side, who overwhelmed them at Old Trafford and knocked them out of the 2023/24 competition.

As the 2024/25 season kicks off, United were back in the mix for the third round and drew Barnsley, but a significant rule change has dictated when they will play the Tykes at Old Trafford.
This year, the third round will span two game weeks to accommodate the revamped European competition formats. United will now have to navigate eight Europa League group-stage matches instead of the usual six.
When is the tie?
With United drawing Barnsley at home in the competition’s third round, Ten Hag’s men will play this tie during the week beginning 16 September before the club’s game against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Barnsley defeated Sheffield United in the last round.
This is a week before many of the other games will take place. Manchester City, Aston Villa, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Liverpool will also play during that mid-week.
What are the other games?
The other 15 games in round three of the competition are as follows:
Liverpool vs West Ham
Manchester City vs Watford
Arsenal vs Bolton
Wycombe vs Aston Villa
Coventry vs Tottenham
Walsall vs Leicester
Brentford vs Leyton Orient
Blackpool vs Sheffield Wednesday
Preston vs Fulham
Everton vs Southampton
QPR vs Crystal Palace
Stoke vs Fleetwood
Brighton vs Wolves
AFC Wimbledon vs Newcastle
Chelsea vs Barrow
