Manchester United finally ended a six-year wait for a trophy with a 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final, and it feels wonderful to taste silverware again.

Newcastle were not afraid to come out and attack United, being on a long trophy drought themselves, but Casemiro stepped up for United in the 33rd minute to power home a header from a Luke Shaw cross, and it just had to be that man.

Six minutes later, Casemiro won a header which set off a transition for United. Weghorst slipped Rashford in behind excellently, whose shot took a slight deflection off Botman and was given as an own goal. The streets will still have the head point celebration to remember.

United spent the second half defending deep but were able to see out a 2-0 win to really kick off the Erik ten Hag era with his first trophy, and there will be more to come.

Here is how UtdDistrict rated the players:

David De Gea – 7/10

Made a good save on Saint-Maximin in the first half.

Diogo Dalot – 6.5/10

Actually handled Saint-Maximin well for the most part, but picked up one yellow card early on which was always a risk so was subbed at half time. Did get spun quite comically at one point.

Raphaël Varane – 8/10

His experience and know-how in these games proved invaluable, led the backline admirably and was constantly seen organising things. Dealt with everything that came his way with ease.

Lisandro Martínez – 8/10

In a game of such high stakes, Licha was always going to rise to the occasion. Defended even more as though his life depended on it than usual, and as always was excellent in possession.

Luke Shaw – 9/10

The best left-back in world football. Assisted Casemiro’s opener with a pinpoint delivery. Handled Newcastle’s wide threat excellently. All in all a world-class performance.

Casemiro – 10/10

He came from Champions League-winning Real Madrid to struggling Manchester United in search of a new challenge and has more than risen to that challenge. Today he showed United fans just why he won so much in Madrid, the single best player on the pitch and his goal was just the cherry on top. United’s best signing since Van Persie.

Fred – 6.5/10

Another who had an early yellow card, and at points in the first half was on very thin ice, but his diligence when defending helped Shaw out on the left-hand side and he recovered the ball well on a few occasions.

Antony – 8/10

Rose to the occasion against Barcelona three days ago, and once again played excellently today. A true bright spark on the right-hand side, and got the crowd going often. Starting to shine for United.

Bruno Fernandes – 7/10

Fairly quiet game from Fernandes, but led the team well. Finally picking up his first trophy with United. Missed a huge chance at the end that he probably should’ve passed to Sancho.

Marcus Rashford – 9/10

Dangerman. Completed four dribbles, forced a goal which should have been given as his, and in general created so much threat.

Wout Weghorst – 8/10

His best game in a Manchester United shirt, and very comfortably too. Assisted Rashford well and linked play to a good level throughout the game too.

Substitutions

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7.5/10

Came on at halftime for Dalot and his ability to defend 1v1 helped to nullify the threat of Saint-Maximin.

Marcel Sabitzer – 7/10

Brought a lot of energy and was very solid.

Scott Mctominay – 7.5/10

Helped to see the game out when United were defending deep by providing an extra body. Won the ball and almost created a goal for Fernandes.

Jadon Sancho – 7/10

Nearly picked up an assist for Wan-Bissaka

Harry Maguire – N/A

Was brought on to see out the win. Gets to lift his first trophy as Manchester United captain in what is likely his final season.
