Barcelona monitoring “dispensable” Manchester United star after multiple Rúben Amorim incidents

Barcelona are reportedly monitoring the situation of a “disposable” Manchester United star after multiple incidents between him and Rúben Amorim this season.

Manchester United have spent the past year cutting down their wage bill and generating transfer funds as Sir Jim Ratcliffe works to stabilise the club’s finances.

Following Jadon Sancho’s move to Chelsea last summer, United continued their clear-out in January, loaning Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa, sending Antony to Real Betis for the rest of the season, and allowing Tyrell Malacia to join PSV Eindhoven—saving the club over £2 million per month in wages.

Several academy graduates also secured loan moves during the winter window, though these exits were primarily focused on ensuring game time for fringe players in Rúben Amorim’s squad rather than financial relief.

Despite these departures, United still have several high earners on their books, with the contracts of Casemiro, Luke Shaw, and Mason Mount frequently criticised by fans as poor financial decisions.

Multiple players are expected to be sold or released in the coming months as the club aim to raise funds ahead of what could be a pivotal summer transfer window.

Barcelona are monitoring Garnacho

Amid United’s financial difficulties, La Liga side Barcelona are said to be monitoring the situation of Alejandro Garnacho ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to reports from Spain, Barcelona have begun to monitor Garnacho closely and will do for the remainder of this season, and they consider him an interesting addition to their squad.

Garnacho has had multiple run-ins with Amorim since the head coach arrived, famously being left out of the squad that beat Manchester City in December.

Recently, he also had to be substituted before half-time due to a red card for Patrick Dorgu against Ipswich Town, and he proceeded to walk past Amorim and straight down the tunnel, which angered some United fans.

According to the Spanish report, a few incidents such as these have left United’s technical management unconcerned about the player.

Garnacho is a “dispensable” asset

Speaking recently about Garnacho, former United striker Michael Owen explained that although he believes the 20-year-old is a very good player, he is “dispensable” at Old Trafford.

“Ability-wise Alejandro Garnacho is very good, but he’s not great,” Owen said via The Mirror. “He’s very good at the moment and lots of people keep telling me how good he is, and I keep watching him think, yeah, he is very good, but I’m still waiting to see him be great.

“I watch probably virtually every Manchester United game and every Liverpool game. People get so carried away now when a young player comes through saying ‘oh he is this or he is that’. Garnacho is a very good player and potentially could be really, really good if he keeps improving.”

He continued: “At the moment, he’s not getting into the Manchester United side. If he was that good, you know, Rúben Amorim would consider him to be undroppable even though he has been reportedly misbehaving.

“I mean, Eric Cantona, kung fu kicks someone, but, you know, he’s that good and that important so you move heaven and earth to brush it under the carpet and as soon as he’s able to play you get him back in.

“There is a choice for Amorim and he’s not playing him. He’s a good player. I’m sure Manchester United fans will want to keep him, but Amorim will be seeing him every day and making his choices. So far, actions speak louder than words, and Amorim’s actions say that he’s possibly dispensable.”
