Manchester United star praised by ex-player for “excellent” performances, he could be captain vs Newcastle
One Manchester United star who could become Rúben Amorim’s captain against Newcastle has been praised for his “excellent” performances this season.
Manchester United’s 2024/25 season has been yet another of consistent performances and results purging fantastic moments – it has been the story of the club ever since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013.
Rúben Amorim’s first month in charge has seen the club secure some positive results, with wings against Manchester City and Everton being key highlights.
However, individual errors from players have also left the club suffering shock losses against the likes of Bournemouth, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Nottingham Forest.
Despite this, there are many reasons to be positive at United, with individual performances from those such as André Onana, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui allowing the club’s fans to see a brighter future as the side sit 14th in the league table.
Onana singled out for “excellent” United performances
André Onana, bar a couple of errors, has been fantastic at the club, with United routinely being saved by his brilliant moments. His abilities on the ball have also allowed Amorim to start implementing a build-up system from his defence to attack, although much still must be improved.
Former United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich has had his say on the 28-year-old, feeling that he has been one of the best players in the squad this season despite giving some fans a scare with risky passes.
“He’s been very good, bordering on excellent, all season,” the 52-year-old told RG.
“He’s had a tough time lately, but it’s tough when you’re a goalkeeper who’s playing for an unsettled team who’ve had their worst-ever start to a Premier League season, and his shot-stopping percentage has been up there with the best.
“Sometimes, he gives people kittens with the way he plays out the back, but overall, he’s held himself in good stead in terms of what he’s achieved.”
Onana could be United’s captain vs Newcastle
Amorim has a big decision to make as Manchester United host Newcastle United at Old Trafford in what will be the final Premier League fixture of 2024.
With Bruno Fernandes suspended due to his red card against Wolves during midweek, Amorim must pick a new interim captain for the fixture. Onana is one of three standout candidates for the role on Monday evening.
Onana is one of the few players in the squad who is guaranteed a starting spot against Newcastle, having played in every Premier League fixture since he arrived at the club in 2023.
He is also someone who has shown leadership and resilience in the face of adversity, which is a trait that United desperately need in their on-field leaders right now.
While Harry Maguire and Casemiro are also potential recipients of the armband, there is a question surrounding whether Maguire will start amid the return of Matthijs de Ligt.
Casemiro has not played much of a role at the club since Amorim’s arrival, making the Brazilian less likely to receive such responsibility under the head coach.
