Rúben Amorim will be delighted to see that one Manchester United star has achieved a feet he’s only managed three times across a turbulent 2025 so far.

Manchester United’s defensive frailties have been evident under Rúben Amorim so far, with the side often making poor mistakes that have lead to unnecessary goals.

While those such as Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, and Leny Yoro have put in inidvidually great displays, the last few months have seen breakdowns in communcations at times.

André Onana recently went through a spell of errors against those such as Brighton and Ipswich Town, which have hampered team results.

The lack of consistency in defence has also been aided by absences, with Lisandro Martínez, Harry Maguire, Yoro, and Patrick Dorgu having missed games of late due to either injury or suspension.

Onana put in positive performance with Cameroon

However, Amorim will be pleased to see that Onana was able to keep a clean sheet as Cameroon faced Eswatini in a World Cup qualification group game, with the two sides battling out a 0-0 draw.

As mentioned above, Onana has made some mistakes lately which have led to questions about his suitability to be United’s long-term first-choice goalkeeper and former United defender Paul Parker branding him “useless.” This clean sheet comes as only his third in 2025.

Onana’s other two have come against Leicester City last weekend and a tense 1-0 victory over Fulham in January away from home, with the club’s only other clean sheet this year being a 2-0 Europa League win over FCSB in which Altay Bayındır started in goal.

Despite recent speculation that Amorim will look to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, Onana is said to be confident that the position will remain in his hands once the summer passes.

Clean sheets are an important part of momentum

Amorim will be hoping that, amid a tough run of fixtures that greet United once they return to domestic action, the defence will be able to build on the win against Leicester and keep more clean sheets.

United’s recommencement of their season will see them travel to face Nottingham Forest on 1 April before welcoming Manchester City to Old Trafford for what will no doubt be a fierce, Manchester Derby.

They will then off against Olympique Lyonnais in the Europa League in the first of a two-legged quarter-final fixture before travelling to Newcastle to face Eddie Howe’s men.

Amorim’s men will then see Lyon travel to Old Trafford for the return leg of their quarter-final before sticking at Old Trafford as Wolverhampton Wanderers come to town.

It will be no easy task keeping clean sheets against a series of high and flying opposition, but with a feeling of momentum slowly gaining within the squad, many fans are hopeful for a strong end to the season.
