Manchester United have reacted as Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies makes a U-turn on his current transfer status as he becomes a free agent.

Manchester United have reportedly expressed interest in signing Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes in 2025, as Rúben Amorim seeks to address the defensive shortcomings that have hindered his side’s progress at Old Trafford.

Defensive vulnerabilities, particularly at set pieces, have been a glaring issue under Amorim’s leadership. Reinforcing the backline is expected to be a major focus in the upcoming transfer window.

United’s struggles at left-back stretch back over the past decade. Luke Shaw, their long-time first-choice, has been plagued by recurring injuries ever since his horrific double leg break during a Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven in 2015.

Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s backup, only recently returned after a grueling 17-month recovery period following a serious knee injury that required multiple operations.

In their absence, Diogo Dalot has stepped in at left-back, but Amorim has acknowledged that the versatile defender is far more effective in his natural position on the right.

Davies makes transfer U-turn amid “several offers”

While Mendes seems like one of United’s most realistic and tangible left-back replacements, the club have also been closely linked with Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies during the last few months.

Davies is set to become a free agent at the end of June, and as of the beginning of January, he is now able to sign a pre-contract agreement with any club that offers him one.

However, in a new twist, Relevo reveal that Davies is now giving priority to signing a new contract with Bayern Munich, which is a complete U-turn from the situation surrounding him at the end of last season, when it seemed inevitable that he would leave the Bundesliga giants.

However, it is also stressed that no final decision has been made, and that the Canadian international’s agent also has meetings with several clubs lined up, with Real Madrid, Liverpool, and United all named as interested parties.

United react to Davies’ latest U-turn

Relevo further state that the player has “several offers” from Premier League clubs, although United have seemingly reacted to Davies’ latest choice by taking a “back seat” regarding the player.

A few weeks ago, it was reported that United have become favourites for the 23-year-old after Read Madrid refused to increase their offer for the player, but this situation has now changed.

United are not the only side to have adjusted their stance, with Los Blancos and Liverpool seeing Davies’ potential signing for free as a good market opportunity rather than a necessity.

There is no doubt that United will continue to monitor his contract situation over the coming months, and his agent will likely continue to involve United in order to find his client the best possible contract.
