Manchester United have switched their focus to a £38 million midfield target now that Manuel Ugarte seems unlikely to make the move.

The Reds have made two signings so far this summer but are in desperate need of further additions ahead of the new Premier League season.

In particular, Erik ten Hag’s side needs strengthening in centre-back and central midfield, with the latter being a priority for INEOS.

According to GiveMeSport, the Reds are now considering whether to make a move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

The Brazilian has emerged as an option for United after they needed to step back from their preferred defensive midfield target, Manuel Ugarte, with PSG not budging on their £51 million valuation.

It was added that Ten Hag is mulling over whether to attempt to land Ederson. An initial approach was made to his camp in March before United kept him on their radar as a potential recruit.

Ederson has been strongly linked with an exit and is valued at around £38 million. GiveMeSport added that he has previously received interest from the likes of Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Juventus.

Meanwhile, it was stated that Liverpool scouts were “shocked” when they saw him in action.

The report also mentioned that Sander Berge, André and Joao Gomes are also options for the midfield position at Old Trafford. However, the latter would be more difficult to sign due to his £60 million-plus price tag.

Ederson made 53 appearances for Atalanta last term, scoring seven goals and registering one assist in that time.
