Manchester United youngster Maxi Oyedele has returned to Old Trafford after a difficult loan spell at League Two side Forest Green Rovers.

Oyedele, 19, moved to the Football League side in the January transfer window in a deal that raised eyebrows within the United fanbase.

At the time, then-manager Troy Deeney was receiving a lot of criticism for his comments on the Forest Green players, who were bottom of the league. It seemed a strange environment to move the talented midfielder into.

Deeney was sacked days after Oyedele entered the building, and he has had a tough time under the new manager Steve Cotterill.

With only four appearances, all coming from the bench, the United loanee was not given a chance for the struggling side.

“He has to do a lot more to get in the starting line-up,” said Cotterill after Oyedele’s last game for the club. “I didn’t feel there was enough productivity from him in the second half.”

Interestingly, the teenager lined up for United’s Under-21s side on the weekend and it has since been reported that he is unlikely to return to his loan side.

According to The Mail, while The Reds have not officially recalled Oyedele from his loan, he is expected to feature for Travis Binnion’s Under-21s for the rest of the season, rather than Forest Green.

It was added that the 19-year-old will also get the chance to train with Erik ten Hag’s first team in a bid to continue his development. He was pictured alongside Kobbie Mainoo last week during training at Carrington.

Oyedele has been at United since he was eight years old. He had a successful spell on loan last term at Altrincham, where he made 12 appearances and scored four goals.
