Manchester United receive green light for Premier League transfer but major concern is clear
Manchester United have received a green light for one Premier League transfer, but a major concern surrounding a deal is clear.
The Reds are aiming to finalise their squad for Erik ten Hag in the coming weeks, having recently secured Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.
These signings follow the earlier arrivals of Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee this summer. United’s attention has now shifted to strengthening their midfield and left-back positions.
Manuel Ugarte is the top target to reinforce the midfield at Old Trafford, while several candidates are being considered to bolster the defence.
It has previously been reported by MailOnline that Ben Chilwell is an option that United are considering this summer.
The report explained that the Reds are keen to provide competition for the now-injured Luke Shaw.
Chilwell, who joined Chelsea in the summer of 2020, is free to leave Stamford Bridge after new manager Enzo Maresca admitted that it is better for the defender to depart.
“Chilly is with us, but he has not been training for the last few days because he has been ill,” Maresca said this week.
“The reason he did not play versus Inter was because, with Chilly, it is quite clear, even though I love the way he is, the problem is he is struggling a bit to find the right position.
“This morning, we had 22 players training, and if you ask all of them, they will say they want to play against City on Sunday. But that is impossible. When you train every day and do not get any minutes it is not good for them or for me.
“I need to make a decision, and probably it is better to leave and go and get minutes. The transfer window is open, so we’ll see what happens.”
One major concern
While signing Chilwell would have some clear positives, such as being Premier League-proven and a solid attacking fullback when at full fitness, he brings prominent concerns.
His injury record is similar to Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, having missed 100 games through injury in the last three seasons.
United are looking for a reliable defender to fill an extremely unreliable position at left back. They do not need further injury concerns.
This does not even consider the fact that Chilwell will not be cheap. He has three years remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge and whilst his current employers are keen to see him leave, it is doubtful that they drop his price enough for a deal to be worthwhile to United.
Other options are on the table for United, and they should look to ignore the Chelsea defender despite the clear green light for a transfer.
