Gary Neville believes that Erik ten Hag has taken control at Manchester United following the club’s Carabao Cup win on Sunday.

United were 2-0 victors in the final against Newcastle and won their first trophy in just under six years – and the first in Ten Hag’s tenure at Old Trafford.

Despite there being debates amongst fans about different players, it seems that everyone is in agreement that Ten Hag is the man to take the club forward.

Neville, who made 602 appearances for the club, has pointed out the importance of certain decisions the Dutchman has made – even though some of those have been risky ones.

“I think the big things; leaving Marcus Rashford out who was doing well for being late in the Wolves game, obviously the way in which Cristiano Ronaldo’s situation was dealt with, Harry Maguire as captain has been left out – they are massive decisions and courageous ones that could’ve easily gone the other way,” said Neville, when speaking about the impact of Ten Hag at the club on Sky Sports.

“But what I think he’s done, he’s assumed control in the club. I think at a football club, you think of Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp, there’s no doubt that they’re the most important figure in the football club and Erik ten Hag in the last few months has taken control at Manchester United.”

Winning his first trophy just seven months into his first season with the club will give Ten Hag even more credit in the bank.

United fans in Wembley were superb on the day and were rewarded with some brilliant moments after the full-time whistle.

All of the players were hyping the crowd up with their celebrations with the trophy, but they showed that their love for the manager is currently the biggest thing at the club.

“The fans love the team again and you saw the cheer that the fans gave him, by the way,” added Neville. “They love those players, they love Casemiro, they love Rashford – but when he went and lifted the trophy, there was no doubt who they think the most important person is.”

United turn their attention to the FA Cup fifth-round fixture against West Ham. They will be hoping to progress into the latter stages of that domestic cup competition now.
