Man City causing Rúben Amorim transfer “problem” as they eye Manchester United hijack
Manchester City have been touted to cause Rúben Amorim a transfer headache as they look to hijack a transfer Manchester United are planning in the summer.
Manchester United have entered the 2025 January transfer window in a precarious position, following a run of four straight defeats across the Premier League and Carabao Cup.
Rúben Amorim faces the daunting task of reshaping a squad in desperate need of reinforcements. However, the club’s financial situation is dire, largely due to the heavy spending during Erik ten Hag’s tenure of just over two seasons.
United’s needs are extensive: a new left-back, at least one centre-back, a striker, and multiple midfielders are required to steady the ship. Yet, limited finances mean they cannot afford to address these issues outright.
To fund new signings, the club are focusing on clearing out unwanted players in January and the summer, hoping to create the financial flexibility needed to rebuild.
United planning summer bid for Atalanta’s Ederson
With Casemiro and Christian Eriksen certain to leave United in 2025, the club are looking to bring in at least one new midfielder in the coming months.
According to GiveMeSport, one star the club are looking at is Ederson, although they do not have the funds to secure him this winter window.
Although United’s poor run of form in December has shown that January recruits are ideal, they are set to delay any move for the 25-year-old Brazilian until the summer window.
Atalanta are said to be holding out for a fee of around of £50 million in order to sell their prized asset, and they are keen to deter potential suitors in January as they fear losing Ederson would harm their Serie A title challenge and ability to go far in the Champions League.
Man City eyeing potential raid of Amorim’s plans
Although Amorim is said to be looking for United to secure Ederson in the summer, it’s also added that cross-town rivals Manchester City are not far behind in their transfer plans.
With Pep Guardiola’s side interested in the player, should they choose to act on their interest, this would pose a real problem to Amorim and his pursuit of Ederson as City may be able to present a much more attractive project despite their recent woes.
Ederson still has a further two and a half years on his current £40,000-a-week contract, meaning Atalanta retain a strong bargaining position for the 2025 winter and summer windows.
Despite choosing to sign Manuel Ugarte over Ederson last summer, he remains a player of key interest to the Red Devils, who will no doubt be looking to secure him should the opportunity arrise.
