Transfer expert David Ornstein has provided Manchester United fans with an update on Rúben Amorim’s pursuit of first-choice target Matheus Cunha.
Manchester United are reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha this summer, aiming to strengthen Rúben Amorim’s attacking options.
This season, the club has struggled with consistent goal-scoring, relying heavily on captain Bruno Fernandes, particularly after Amad was sidelined for two months due to injury.
Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Højlund have combined for just 20 goals this campaign, with only five players reaching more than ten goal involvements. Marcus Rashford, who is set to be sold this summer, is one of them.
As a result, Amorim is focusing on adding players who fit his 3-4-3 formation, with Cunha seen as a perfect fit for the left attacking role.
United provided with Cunha transfer latest
The news that broke Cunha’s likely transfer to Old Trafford this summer surfaced late last month, although following news that all parties expect the move to go through soon, the news has since petered out.
However, in his latest Q&A session with The Athletic, transfer expert David Ornstein has explained the latest surrounding Cunha, explaining that not much more can be done until his £62.5 million release clause becomes active at the beginning of the summer window.
However, the journalist did reveal that the club have now made an offer to Cunha surrounding personal terms.
“I don’t think it has died down, there’s just not a great deal that can happen until the season ends and his release clause becomes active,” Ornstein explained when asked if there was any update.
“In the meantime, Man United will seek to get personal terms in place – they’ve made an offer, but I’m not aware of an agreement yet, so they’ll continue discussing it in an effort to get there.
“If/when that happens and the clause becomes active, they can get the deal done. Also, they’ve got the small matter of a Europa League semi-final – and likely final – to be focusing on, although European football will not impact their ability to sign Cunha.”
How much will Cunha earn at United?
According to reports from last month, Cunha’s wage at Old Trafford is expected to sit at around £200,000 a week, which would make him the third highest earner at Old Trafford.
He would sit at just above Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt, who earn £190,000 a week and £195,000 a week respectively.
Out of the side’s current players, only Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro sit at above Cunha’s expected wage, although Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho’s contracts also hit over £200,000 a week.
However, with both players currently on loan and their wages being taken in part by Aston Villa and Chelsea, respectively, United are not currently paying for their whole wage packages.
Both players are expected to depart Old Trafford this summer, and will therefore not be within the club’s wage books once the 2024/25 season kicks off.
