Manchester United have now had confirmation of who UEFA have picked to officiate their upcoming Europa League tie against Olympique Lyonnais on Thursday evening.
Manchester United shift their focus back to Europa League action this Thursday evening, traveling to France to face Olympique Lyonnais in the quarter-finals.
Rúben Amorim’s side advanced to this stage with a comfortable 5-2 aggregate win over Real Sociedad, showing both attacking strength and defensive solidity. They remain the only unbeaten team in this year’s competition.
Lyon, meanwhile, cruised into the quarter-finals with a dominant 7-1 aggregate victory over FCSB, and they’ll be a tough challenge for United.
Despite their strong European form, Amorim’s men have struggled to find the net in their last two Premier League matches against Nottingham Forest and Manchester City. The United manager will be hoping his team can rediscover their goal-scoring touch in Lyon this week.
Confirmed officials
Swedish Glenn Nyberg (pictured below) will be the referee on Thursday evening in Lyon. Nyberg has officiated five Champions League fixtures this season, one in the Europa League, and five others in Swedish competitions, among others.
Nyberg has officiated once before, during a tie in September 2023. It was the Champions League fixture where Erik ten Hag’s men lost 4-3 away from home against Bayern Munich in which Casemiro scored a brace.
So far this season, Nyberg has issued 54 yellow cards across all competitions. He has issued two red cards this season and has awarded six penalties across his 16 fixtures, one each coming in the Champions League and Europa League.
During the game, Mahbod Beigi and Andreas Söderkvist will serve as Nyberg’s assistant referees. Adam Ladebäck will be the fourth official on Thursday evening, separating Amorim and Paulo Fonseca.
Christian Dingert has been appointed as the Video Assistant Referee. Alen Borošak will act as assistant VAR.
