“Serious possibility…” Rúben Amorim makes Luke Shaw Manchester United transfer decision
According to a new report, Rúben Amorim has made a decision on the potential future of Luke Shaw amid the club’s search for a new left wing-back.
Manchester United are looking to bring in a new left wing-back for Rúben Amorim during the January transfer window, as defensive weaknesses continue to hamper their progress.
Set-piece vulnerabilities have been a persistent problem for United under Amorim, with the left-back position identified as a key area in need of reinforcement.
Luke Shaw, the club’s long-serving left-back, has been plagued by injuries since his double leg fracture in a Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven in 2015.
Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s understudy, has also faced setbacks, recently returning from a gruelling 17-month recovery following multiple knee surgeries.
In the interim, Diogo Dalot has been filling in on the left, but Amorim has admitted that Dalot is more effective when deployed in his natural role on the right-hand side.
Amorim makes decision on Shaw’s future
United’s hunt for a new left wing-back has thrown Shaw’s future into massive doubt, with his constant injury issues making him a wholly unreliable asset.
According to GiveMeSport, there is now a “serious possibility” that Amorim will sanction the 29-year-old’s departure in the summer if the player attracts interest.
United are gunning to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce this month, with representatives from the club flying to Milan on Tuesday to sit down with the Serie A side amid competition from Napoli for the 20-year-old.
Shaw currently earns around £200,000 a week at United, having signed a new four-year deal in April 2023, but he may well be moved on should fresh options arrive for the left flank.
Malacia also available for loan this month
Amid uncertainty surrounding Shaw’s future, Malacia has also agreed to leave Old Trafford this month on loan.
A report from the Netherlands last week explained that Malacia and United had come to an agreement that it is best if he finds game-time elsewhere, departing on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
Malacia is thought to be aware that his future at United may be increasingly limited due to United’s potential signing of Dorgu, with several Serie A clubs interested in the 25-year-old.
Leaving on loan may be Malacia’s best option in the short term because after 17 months out through injury, he has not had much game-time under Amorim.
A loan move would allow him to regain minutes in his legs as well as showcase his skills either to the United head coach or potential summer suitors. With Antony set to sign with Real Betis on loan this week, Malacia is another player likely to head out of the door.
