Louis Saha has given advice to one Manchester United star who Ruben Amorim went ‘ballistic’ at during a recent game.

Manchester United have delivered mixed results since Ruben Amorim stepped in as head coach last month.

In the Portuguese boss’ first five matches, the Reds have recorded two victories, one draw, and two defeats.

While the start has been far from ideal, Amorim is taking this opportunity to assess his squad and determine which players fit into his long-term plans.

Some players have thrived in these opening games, such as Noussair Mazraoui and Amad Diallo, while others have not hugely impressed.

Joshua Zirkzee has shown mixed form since he arrived at Old Trafford, with just three goals in 21 appearances. However, two of those did come in his only start under Amorim so far.

Zirkzee netted twice against Everton in the recent 4-0 win when he started as the no.9 and the game would’ve given him important confidence.

But he still needs to improve all areas of his game. During the first half of that clash, Amorim had gone ‘ballistic’ at the frontman due to being out of position to press, Samuel Luckhurst noted.

Many fans have been critical of Zirkzee’s casual approach in games so far and Amorim has made a point about the need to be physical – something that Zirkzee looks like he could offer but hasn’t showcased yet.

Former United striker Louis Saha believes that Zirkzee needs to find a balance of getting the ball to feet, which is where he’s comfortable, while also making runs in behind the defensive line to score more goals.

“Zirkzee is a big lad. He can really provide a focal point at the top, but he’s not an aggressive No. 9. He’ll have to be a nine-and-a-half: lead the line, be aggressive when needed, and try to stretch the lines and the pitch,” Saha told Casino Utan Spelpaus.

“The balance that he needs to find in the next few games is to find a way to be consistent in the way that he comes to the ball. That’s why he likes the ball on his feet, but he needs to really ask for the ball.

“Even if he’s offside for two or three times at the very beginning of  games, it doesn’t matter because its about getting the ball straight to the midfield to players who are great with the ball – Casemiro, Fernandes, Amad.

“Strikers need to get behind the defender’s line. That’s the thing that I was looking for from him. This is where he needs to really open up his game and say, ‘Okay, as a striker I need to be there when the ball is thrown in the box. When we build, I need to get in behind.’ If he can do that, I’m sure he’s going to score a lot of goals.”
