Manchester United are set to receive competition from Liverpool and potentially Al-Hilal for one of their summer transfer targets.
Manchester United have just come through one of their most disappointing seasons in recent memory, and significant changes are needed to steer the club back on course at Old Trafford.
This summer, the focus must be on bringing in top-level talent like Matheus Cunha, while also offloading players who no longer align with the team’s future plans.
Ruben Amorim will be under the spotlight as he works to refine his tactical approach and adapt to the demands of Premier League football following a challenging start.
Many view this transfer window as one of the most pivotal in the club’s modern era — a crucial opportunity to lay the groundwork for meaningful progress if the right decisions are made.
Liverpool and Al-Hilal interested in hijacking United target
While it is well known that United want to strengthen their forward line, Amorim also wants to bring in another midfielder to play in the pivot.
Ederson of Atalanta has been regularly linked with an Old Trafford move in the past and the ‘crazy’ midfielder is expected to be one of the players they target this summer.
However, it was recently revealed that Al-Hilal will be attempting to sign Ederson if their efforts to convince Bruno Fernandes of a move to Saudi Arabia fail.
Now, GiveMeSport also claim that United rivals Liverpool are eyeing a deal for the Brazilian midfielder this summer. It is started that Arne Slot’s side are looking to take advantage of United’s problems by hijacking their deal for Ederson.
United’s budget this summer is limited and they would not be able to afford more than one more signing beyond Cunha without any sales. The aforementioned report clarified that the main priority right now is in the forward line and that the available money will go towards that.
This means that the Reds would be unable to approach Ederson or any other midfielders until they have sold a couple of players, which gives the likes of Liverpool an opportunity to jump in front of them and secure the signing of Ederson.
United midfielder needs to dictate tempo
While United are in desperate need of another midfield player, some would argue that they need to be an expert ball-player, rather than a destroyer.
Ederson’s excellence is partly due to his ability to get around the pitch but some would suggest that a player who can dictate the tempo of the game is what United are missing most.

The last midfielder at Old Trafford with the ability to do that was Nemanja Matic, and before him Michael Carrick. It seems to be a profile that United constantly forget about in the transfer market.
While ensuring the physical levels go up is a key thing for Amorim, he will also want to be able to get more control of games and that can be done with a top midfield signing.
