Argentina international hails Man Utd’s Lisandro Martínez decision, sends dig at rival club
Argentina international Christian Romero has heaped praise on Manchester United’s Lisandro Martínez as the centre-back returns from injury.
Lisandro Martínez has been out with a knee injury since the middle of February when he was substituted off with a problem against West Ham in a 3-0 win at Old Trafford.
Martínez has missed 44 games for Erik ten Hag since he joined Manchester United, with the player having undergone three unfortunate problems out of his control in the last 12 months.

However, the former Ajax defender recently travelled to Argentina to be with the national team as he continues his rehabilitation there ahead of United’s clash at Old Trafford against Brentford.
Speaking to Gastón Edul, Tottenham Hotspur defender and Argentina international Christian Romero has praised Martínez for his willingness to be with the Argentina team despite his injury, aiming a dig at rival clubs for not allowing other players to do so.
“It’s nice to see that willingness to come despite the club not allowing it due to injury,” Romero said during the interview.
“I’m surprised by what happens in other countries where they don’t feel it the same way. Here, we are family, and sometimes you say, ‘How much longer until we’re all back together?’ You see another group and there are news that some player is returning because they’re fighting for the league or because the coach is afraid the players might get injured.
“If they were to tell Licha that he has to return earlier, I’m sure he would say no. The same goes for any of us. That’s admirable.”
Manchester United are hopeful that Martínez will be back to play at least some part of the fixture against Brentford, and he is expected to be back in the squad on Saturday evening.
Martínez is so important
Having Lisandro Martínez back is vital for Manchester United and Erik ten Hag as they look to chase the FA Cup trophy and the Champions League spots in the Premier League.
One key reason for Martínez’s importance to Manchester United is his versatility. He can play as a centre-back or defensive midfielder, and his ability to adapt to different positions offers tactical flexibility for Erik ten Hag. Whether anchoring the defence or providing cover in midfield, Martínez’s presence solidifies the team’s spine and enhances its defensive solidity.
Martínez’s ball-playing abilities are another aspect that makes him stand out. In an era where building from the back is paramount, his composure on the ball and precise distribution fit perfectly with Manchester United’s desired style of play. He adds an extra dimension to the team’s build-up play, facilitating smoother transitions from defence to attack.
Moreover, Martínez brings a wealth of experience despite his relatively young age. Having played at a high level for both club and country, he possesses the leadership qualities and tactical intelligence to make an immediate impact. His presence in the dressing room and on the pitch adds invaluable depth to the squad, particularly in crucial moments of the season such as now.
Furthermore, Martínez’s potential for further development makes his signing even more significant for Manchester United. Still in the developing stages of his career at age 26, he has ample room to grow and refine his game under the guidance of the coaching staff at Old Trafford. His acquisition signals not only a reinforcement for the present but also an investment in the club’s future success.
