“Incredible emotion…” Lisandro Martínez reacts to first Argentina goal after Copa America win
Lisandro Martínez netted his first-ever goal for the Argentina national side as the Manchester United star helped them advance to the Copa America semi-finals.
Lisandro Martínez is one of Manchester United‘s most important players, and his miss last campaign was a big reason why Erik ten Hag‘s squad was unable to reach expected heights.
United finished eighth in the Premier League table and exited the Champions League before Christmas, and Martínez made only 14 appearances across the season due to multiple long-term injuries.

However, he started during the most important one—an FA Cup final win over Manchester City. He played 73 minutes at Wembley and was nothing short of fantastic.
Despite his few appearances, he is firmly in Lionel Scanoli’s Argentina starting XI and has played every fixture so far at the 2024 Copa America championships. On Thursday night, he notched his first-ever goal for his country, which can be watched below.
Speaking to the media after full-time, Martínez explained that he was feeling incredibly emotional after his first Argentina goal.
“I have an incredible emotion for having scored my first goal with this shirt,” he said. “Walter (Samuel, assistant manager) told me that on the first corner kick, I had to go to the far post, and that’s how it was.
“We couldn’t play very well, but we have a pasture and a neighbourhood. When we can’t play, we score. We adapt.”
The tie ended 1-1 and went straight to penalties, where La Albiceleste advanced to the semi-finals after winning 4-2 thanks to two penalty saves from Aston Villa shot-stopper Emiliano Martínez.
