Lisandro Martinez has stated that he is willing to play in midfield for Manchester United to help Erik ten Hag’s most recent problem following Casemiro’s sending-off against Southampton.
Martinez, 25, joined United in the summer from Ajax and has been one of the standout players so far this season.
Despite external concerns about his height being a problem in the Premier League as Ten Hag chose to utilise the Argenine as a left-sided central defender, he has had no trouble thriving in England’s top flight.
However, with the Brazilian protector Casemiro being suspended for the next four domestic matches, Martinez could possibly be an option to fill the void at the heart of the midfield.
He has played there previously during his time at Ajax and has the composure, tenacity and passing ability for the role. Although, it has been suggested that Ten Hag did not prefer him in that position when the pair were together in Amsterdam.
Yet, the loss of Christian Eriksen in January limited United’s on-ball impact in midfield and that will only be furthered through the loss of Casemiro. Martinez could be called upon to make the switch and he’s explained how he’s ready to do anything to help the team.
“We have many good midfielders,” he began when asked whether he could play further forward. “Like I have said in many interviews, I will play wherever the coach wants to use me.”
Martinez in midfield seemed like it would be an option for Ten Hag at the beginning of the season but he’s been incredible in the defence that it would seem counterproductive to move him from his best position. Yet, the circumstances presented with United’s best pivot partnership being out could twist his hand.
In defence, the 25-year-old has developed a brilliant understanding with Raphael Varane both on and off the pitch.
“Rapha is an amazing player and I really enjoy playing with him,” continued Martinez. “We always enjoy training together and we are working hard.
“I think we are doing an amazing job, but we also have Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire. As a player, when you have that connection, you can get clean sheets.”
