Liam Delap told to “show character” and make Manchester United move despite Chelsea interest

Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap has been told that making a move to Manchester United this summer would “show character” amid interest from other Premier League clubs.

Manchester United are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements in the summer and the club have identified Liam Delap as a potential solution to their goalscoring problems.

Ruben Amorim’s side have struggled to score this season and that has been encapsulated perfectly in their last two games against Nottingham Forest and Manchester City.

With a natural goalscorer in their ranks, United would have likely won both of those games with the chances they had but instead they left with just one point from six.

Delap has scored 12 goals in the Premier League so far this season despite Ipswich Town struggling towards the bottom of the table.

That form has not only attracted interest from those at Old Trafford, but also other top teams such as Chelsea, who will battle for his signature in the summer window.

Delap told United move would “show character”

Ex-United defender Paul Parker has urged Delap to make the decision to join his former club and claimed that the striker would “show character” by moving to Old Trafford as part of Amorim’s rebuild.

The 61-year-old believes that Delap would be an immediate upgrade on the current options upfront at Old Trafford in Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

“I think Man United would want younger players, who want to prove a point—and I think Liam Delap is one of those,” Parker told bettingexpert.com.

“With a player like him, it doesn’t matter who he’s playing for—he still plays in the same fashion. He demands the ball and makes it obvious he wants it. That’s already an improvement from what they’ve got.”

“He’s 22 years old and has had a season in the top division. Would he want to come to Manchester United? Does he want that? Or would he prefer to go somewhere else?

“I think it would show some character if he moved to United. Football careers are short—if he gets the opportunity, I definitely think he should take it.”

United’s lack of quality upfront could help Delap move

One of the things that could work in United’s favour is the competition Delap would have at either club when assessing both United and Chelsea.

It is fair to say that Nicolas Jackson has had a better time in the Premier League since arriving that United’s star Højlund.

Jackson was in hot form for the Blues earlier this season but has regressed in the second half of the campaign. He still has nine goals and five assists in the league so far this term.

The struggles up front at United are greater and that may influence Delap into thinking he can become the main man at Old Trafford.

It is certainly fair to assume that if the Reds do sign him in the summer window, the England youth international will be a guaranteed starter up front ahead of the other options at the club.
