England boss Lee Carsley explains Harry Maguire selection as Marcus Rashford misses out
New England manager Lee Carsley has explained why he has selected Manchester United’s Harry Maguire for the upcoming fixtures.
With the August fixtures now out of the way, England have announced the squad for their upcoming international games for the first two weeks of September.
While Manchester United‘s Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo have both been selected by new England boss Lee Carsley, Marcus Rashford has missed out on selection.

Maguire was a big part of England under Gareth Southgate and may have wondered whether, once the former England boss left, Maguire’s time would be up, too.
However, in a recent press conference, Carsley explained that he is depending on Maguire to be a leader in his dressing room.
“Harry Maguire obviously missed out on the Euros squad through injury,” Carsley told reporters on Thursday afternoon.
“I see him as a real good leader, especially with the centre-backs that we’ve got as well, along with John Stones, Ez [Konsa] and Levi [Colwill]. Good young defenders, and Marc [Guehi], that are still learning the game, but I think someone like him will be a good example for him.”
Luke Shaw has also missed out of the squad due to injury, with the player not expected to return to United training until after the international break.
Further, Carsley was asked why he decided not to select big names such as United’s Rashford and Tottenham midfielder James Maddison.
“I think it’s probably not a case of why they’re not in,” he replied. “I just think at the minute there’s players, you know, ahead of them. They’re both players that have done really well for England and their clubs in the past.
“They’re players that are definitely on the radar. I’ve watched them live, both players. Yeah, so they’re definitely players that are going to get considered for the future.”
