Altay Bayindir suffered injury at the worst time as the Manchester United back-up goalkeeper had recently shown impressive form.

Manchester United supporters had been unconvinced by Altay Bayindir ever since he signed for the club in the summer of 2023.

The goalkeeper was sparingly used and didn’t look entirely comfortable when he took to the pitch. He received major criticism for his display in the Carabao Cup defeat against Tottenham this season.

Bayindir parried one shot into a dangerous area for one goal and then failed to command his box in the dying stages to concede straight from a corner.

However, the Turkish international continued to get opportunities and turned into United’s hero against Arsenal in the FA Cup, where he saved a penalty in normal time and another in the shootout to knock the Gunners out of the tournament.

The backup ‘keeper then had promising displays against Rangers and FCSB in the Europa League, which led to questions about him potentially taking the place of the underperforming André Onana.

But a recent injury has impacted Bayindir, who has been unavailable for United’s last three games against Leicester City, Spurs and Everton.

Latest Bayindir injury news

It has been claimed that United’s no.1 suffered a muscle injury ahead of the FA Cup clash against Leicester City earlier this month.

Last week, Amorim stated that Bayindir is “recovering” but could not communicate a return date for the goalie, who has been working hard behind the scenes.

The United boss could give further updates on the player before facing Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

Amorim’s side have six more games before the international break in mid-March, including an FA Cup clash and two Europa League games.

Bayindir will be hoping to be back available before that break as Onana is currently struggling between the sticks and he could finally provide an alternative for Amorim.

Amorim told brutal Onana truth

Meanwhile, ex-Inter goalkeeper Alberto Fontana has told Amorim some uncomfortable truths about his first-choice shot-stopper Onana.

Fontana believes that the Cameroon was a waste of money for United and believes the 28-year-old makes saves look more difficult than they are.

“I couldn’t stand André Onana,” Fontana told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “A lot of smoke, a lot of somersaults. I played that role for many years and I know when you want to make something seem difficult that in reality is not.

“The classic ‘saves for the photographers’. I have always not been a fan of Onana and I can’t explain how he is at that level. £50 million for him? Come on, I wouldn’t take him for free.

“He is a goalkeeper who is unpopular with his teammates because he always seeks applause for himself. For me, it is truly inexplicable. So well done Inter for selling him. I don’t think Manchester United are enthusiastic about him.”
