Kobbie Mainoo has been handed an immediate boost regarding his chances of being called up for the England squad ahead of the 2024 European Championships.

Kobbie Mainoo has been Manchester United‘s most consistently fantastic player since making his first start for the club in November 2023.

The 19-year-old has been nothing short of fantastic under Erik ten Hag during what has been a drab and depressing season, being a bright spark while the club have finished eighth in the Premier League table.

Mainoo’s performances have been so good that he was even called up to play for England in March, earning a Man of the Match performance against Belgium during his first start for his country.

Although some felt that calling up the youngster for the upcoming European Championships may be too much of a step up, the Carrington academy graduate has proved many wrong with fantastic performances against elite teams such as Liverpool.

According to The Athletic, Jordan Henderson, a veteran England midfielder, will not be called up to Southgate’s preliminary squad ahead of the tournament, leaving space for Mainoo to join up with the rest of the players at St. Geroge’s Park.

Southgate is set to announce the full squad on Tuesday afternoon at 14:00 BST.

“Everything that we’ve seen with his club, he reproduced in an England shirt, which isn’t always the case,” Southgate said about Mainoo following his first start against Belgium.

“He was very calm, receives the ball so well under pressure, strong, so we are a little bit more open playing that way but the benefits with the ball were clear to see.”
