The reason for Andre Onana’s stance change has been revealed as the Cameroonian goalkeeper agrees to Trabzonspor loan.
Manchester United’s season hasn’t got off to the flying start that many expected it to, given how successful their pre-season tour of the United States was.
Ruben Amorim’s side currently sit in ninth after three games in the Premier League, with four points on the board. The Reds are also out of the Carabao Cup due to a disappointing loss to Grimsby Town on penalties.
In this loss, United opted for Andre Onana in between the sticks, with the Cameroonian being blameworthy for both of Grimsby’s goals. Onana has fallen down the pecking order at the club, with Altay Bayindir starting all three league fixtures.
To rub salt into the wounds for the former Inter Milan goalkeeper, the Reds acquired the services of 23-year-old shot-stopper Senne Lammens on deadline day. Since this, Onana has decided to go on loan to Trabzonspor.
Onana’s change in stance explained
The 29-year-old goalkeeper had believed that he would stay put at United, but due to the signing of Lammens, Amorim had four keepers in his ranks.
According to The Guardian, club sources stated that they were at ease regarding their goalkeeping situation, and pointed out that Onana would be unavailable for the six weeks of the Africa Cup of Nations that starts in December.
Onana’s stance changed when Trabzonspor grew interested in his services, with the Turkish league’s transfer window closing on Friday.
It is now expected that the 29-year-old’s deal for a season-long loan to Trabzonspor will be completed today, Monday, 8 September, with reports saying that he has already signed his contract.
Amorim’s goalkeeping conundrum improving
Having just eradicated his ever-lasting forward conundrum, the last thing that Amorim will have wanted is for a new headache to arise in a different department of the squad.
Since he arrived at Old Trafford, the Portuguese tactician has battled with on and off-pitch drama revolving his attackers, and ultimately, the majority of these forwards have since been replaced.
Now due to a lack of minutes, Amorim risks more drama, but this time, regarding different areas of the side, such as the goalkeeping and midfield departments.
Kobbie Mainoo has already made it clear that he is unhappy with his lack of minutes, so the last thing Amorim would have needed is for Onana to do the same.
A loan move for the Cameroonian international may be just what both he and the United manager will have needed, as the club aims to climb back up to the top of the table.
