Julien Nagelsmann’s thoughts on Man Utd summer appointment revealed amid Oliver Glasner ‘doubts’

Julien Nagelsmann has reportedly got his eyes on the vacant Manchester United manager role, with doubts over Oliver Glasner at Old Trafford.

Once again, Manchester United find themselves in the managerial merry-go-round that never seems to leave the club.

United have recently appointed Michael Carrick as the interim coach until the end of the season as they look to avoid the mistake they made when appointing Rúben Amorim midway through a Premier League season.

Compared to when the likes of Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær were sacked, there seems to be a scarcity of world-class big-name managers who can take over, or even just one main name.

With Chelsea recently appointing Liam Rosenior and even Real Madrid going for Alvaro Arbeloa, as well as Bayern Munich with Vincent Kompany, there seems to be a trend of going for young and up-and-coming coaches.

Nagelsmann interested in United role

Still only 38, Julien Nagelsmann is entering his tenth year of management with experience at Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and now Germany.

While his stock took a slight hit due to his sour end with Bayern, where he won the league in his only full season, he is still regarded as one of the best young tactical minds in football.

Sources at Football Insider have revealed that while his focus is on leading Germany to World Cup glory, should he return to managing at club-level, the United job is of interest to him.

However, with his contract not expiring until the 2028 Euros, significant compensation will be needed to prize the German away.

Football Insider also reported that some of the Red Devils’ chiefs have expressed doubts about appointing Oliver Glasner, with Crystal Palace’s recent poor form compounded by their FA Cup exit to non-league side Macclesfield.

Nagelsmann still a risk

As previously expressed, Nagelsmann is undoubtedly one of the brightest minds in football. His sides tend to play with slick fluidity and with serious attacking prowess, which was clearly evident at Hoffenheim and Leipzig.

He will bring a clear identity to this side, fresh coaching ideas, and will no doubt improve United from where they are now. Despite this, it is not a move that screams of being a straightforward success.

Whether it was the size of the club or his own shift in ideals, something shifted at Bayern with the players seemingly not buying into his methods, and the side not playing the same free-flowing football, with the focus more on possession.

Even at the international level, Nagelsmann has not been the biggest success, although Germany themselves are undergoing a transitional period themselves so their side is not as strong as before.

Finally, while he has shown a change in his tactical ideas from club to club, he does not change the overall system much. This stubbornness is what cost both Erik ten Hag and Rúben Amorim. Whichever manager the officials go for, they need to be someone who is not wedded to just a single system.
