Ruben Amorim decided to drop Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from his Manchester United squad before their dramatic 2-1 win over Manchester City.

Manchester United travelled to the Etihad Stadium for a crucial Manchester Derby but the main focus was on two players sat at home with the game on TV.

Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho were both left out of the squad for the game and Ruben Amorim was inevitably asked about the decision before the game.

His answers strongly suggested that the two attacking players, who have both scored goals against Pep Guardiola’s side, were not up to scratch in training ahead of the game.

Winning the clash 2-1 against their bitter rivals, with two late goals to produce a stunning comeback, only supported Amorim’s decision to leave those two players out.

Journalist suggests Wilcox had role in dropping

However, it may have not just been his decision, with one journalist suggesting that technical director Jason Wilcox would’ve had a role in the decision.

Laurie Whitwell said on the Talk of the Devils podcast that he would have been ‘amazed’ if Amorim did not speak about dropped the two players with Wilcox.

“In the press conference afterwards, Amorim said that we’ve tried a lot of things with Rashford previously, they haven’t worked, let’s try something different,” the journalist said.

“Which said one thing about what he’s trying to do here in this moment but also suggested to me that he’s spoken to people at the club that have been here longer than him, maybe some executives.

“Jason Wilcox was sat in between Sir Dave Brailsford and Sir Jim Ratcliffe today, which I thought was maybe notable.

Obviously, Dan Ashworth has departed. It feels like Jason Wilcox will take up more of that kind of responsibility.

He’s the one at the training ground every day, watching training every day. So I’d be amazed if they hadn’t had a conversation, Ruben Amorin and Jason Wilcox between them, about this kind of situation.”
