Joshua Zirkzee looks set to be offered two routes of escape from Manchester United amid his lack of game time under Rúben Amorim.
When Manchester United announced the signing of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna in the summer of 2024, the optimism was sky high as he was the main striker that United had at the tim,e but now Benjmain Šeško and Matheus Cunha are ahead of him in the starting XI.
Zirkzee’s potential exit during the January transfer window suggests he isn’t getting enough playing time this season, which is no doubt why he reportedly wants to make a move.
Barely over a season later, Zirkzee’s future at Old Trafford continues to look uncertain. Reports from various British media suggest that the striker could leave in the January Transfer window.
Ruben Amorim has publicly praised Zirkzee’s effort he hasn’t ruled out a January exit. “I want to keep Josh because he gives everything,” Amorim previously stated. “He’s trying in training, but when the transfer window opens, we’ll see what happens.”
United weigh up offers for Zirkzee
According to The Times, the Dutch striker is “considering leaving Manchester United in the January transfer window ” after growing frustrated with his lack of playing time under Amorim. Further, The Sun have reported that he has made it clear he is ready to leave if his current predicament continues.
The 24-year-old forward has featured for only 82 minutes in the Premier League this season, sparking the question about his role in the squad.
The report notes that AS Roma and Como 1907 are closely monitoring Zirkzee’s situation ahead of the winter window and are ready to offer him an escape route.
Roma view him as a flexible attacking option who could thrive in the Serie A, while newly ambitious Como are exploring the possibility of signing him as part of their long-term project.
The Times highlight growing concerns that Zirkzee’s limited game time could jeopardise his international ambitions with the Netherlands. With the 2026 World Cup cycle approaching, regular football is seen as essential for maintaining his form and visibility to Dutch national team selectors.
United, meanwhile are reportedly open to discussions if the right offer arrives-potentially including a loan to buy arrangement.
While Amorim has publicly praised Zirkzee’s attitude and professionalism, the report suggests that a mid-season move could suit both parties if opportunities remain limited at Old Trafford.
Uncertainty surrounds Zirkzee’s role in Amorim’s project
If Zirkzee chooses to remain at Man United beyond the transfer window, it could represent both a risk and an opportunity.
Staying would allow him to continue working under Amorim, a coach who has publicly praised him. Amorim’s attacking system rewards intelligent movement and combination play – two of Zirkzee’s best traits.
Remaining at United could also help Zirkzee solidify his Premier League credentials. Competing for a starting spot alongside Rasmus Højlund would push him to improve his physicality and intensity, attributes critics have often questioned.
If he finds his form, his versatility —being able to drop deep or link play—could make him a valuable asset in the rotation.
If Zirkzee decides to leave Man United in January, it could open the door to a much-needed career rest. The Dutch striker has struggled for regular minutes at Old Trafford, and a move away could provide him with the consistent playing time and tactical freedom he need to rediscover his best form
However, leaving United is not without risk. A failed loan or transfer could further damage his career trajectory, especially if he struggles to rediscover his previous Bologna form quickly.
Yet for many analysts, the potential rewards outweigh the risk: a move could reignite the career of a player who still possesses enormous potential but simply hasn’t found the right rhythm in Manchester.
