Manchester United completed the transfer of 23-year-old Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee on Sunday afternoon.

Zirkzee, 23, becomes the first summer signing and will provide another option for Erik ten Hag in his forward line at United.

The deal quickly materialised after the Netherlands were knocked out of Euro 2024 by England in the semi-final of the competition.

Following that game, Zirkzee was pictured in conversation with England and United star Kobbie Mainoo, and following his signing, Zirkzee was asked about what was said.

“Yeah, he just asked if I was coming,” explained the striker when questioned on what Mainoo said to him. “I said, ‘See you soon after the final.'”

Both Mainoo and Zirkzee will be afforded around three weeks’ holiday following their participation in the tournament.

England fell at the last hurdle against Spain, losing the final 2-1, but United’s young star can hold his head high after an excellent debut tournament with the Three Lions.

Zirkzee is looking forward to joining his new teammates ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

He said: “Having had discussions with the manager and the leaders of the club, I know how exciting the future is going to be here, and I cannot wait to play my part in achieving success for Manchester United.

“I am a player who has always dedicated everything to winning; I’m ready for this next challenge, to go to another level in my career and win more trophies.

“It is a privilege to join such an iconic club. I have to take a short break now after being with the national team, but I’ll be coming back ready to make an impact straight away.”
