Why Joshua Zirkzee did not appear for Manchester United in Community Shield defeat
Joshua Zirkzee will have to wait to make his Manchester United debut after remaining on the bench during the Community Shield defeat against Manchester City.
Erik ten Hag chose to play Bruno Fernandes as the striker for Manchester United in their Community Shield clash against Pep Guardiola’s men at Wembley Stadium.
It was the final time they took to the pitch before the Premier League season begins next Friday, with an opening day fixture against Fulham.
Alejandro Garnacho scored a brilliant goal to open the scoring late on, cutting inside on his weaker left foot and slotting the ball past Ederson.
However, Bernardo Silva equalized with a header just two minutes from time.
After 90 minutes, the match ended 1-1, and it proceeded to penalties, where City secured a 7-6 victory. Jonny Evans missed his spot-kick, and Ederson made a crucial save to deny Jadon Sancho.
Joshua Zirkzee was not expected to start the game, but many thought that he would come off the bench to prepare for the Premier League next week.
However, the new Dutch striker remained on the bench while Garnacho, Sancho, Facundo Pellistri, Scott McTominay and Toby Collyer came in during the second half.
Ten Hag explained before the game that Zirkzee “needs time” to adjust to the club after only taking part in two training sessions with the rest of the squad and that he will carefully bring him into the team.
He told MUTV before the game: “There are many games to play. He needs time. Every player at a new club, not only at Manchester United or only when you come to the Premier League, everyone needs time.
“We have to be patient, and we have to bring him carefully [into the team], and then he will adjust. I am sure he will contribute a lot.”
The 23-year-old will hope to make his debut on Friday in the opening Premier League fixture against Fulham at Old Trafford.
