Jordan Pickford has handed Manchester United a much-needed update on the fitness of Luke Shaw while away with the England camp at the 2024 European Championships.

England advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2024 European Championships after a narrow 2-1 victory over Slovakia on Sunday afternoon.

Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane‘s goals, one before and one after the 90-minute mark, ensured their progression to the next round, where they will meet Switzerland in the final eight of the tournament.

Despite criticism directed at several England players for their performances, Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo, who made his competitive debut for his country, delivered an outstanding display.

However, one United player who has yet to see a single minute of football is Luke Shaw, who was taken to Germany by Gareth Southgate despite his long-term injury problem.

Shaw has not played a minute of football since mid-February, but due to his importance for England when fit, he was taken on the plane with the view of introducing him once he had recovered from his problem.

Shaw has been on the bench for three of the four games, and Southgate revealed on Saturday that he may get minutes off the bench – although this did not happen due to England’s need for a goal.

Jordan Pickford, who is England’s first-choice goalkeeper, has revealed that Shaw was, in fact, ready to come on if needed and is ready to play.

“He was ready to come on last night, but I’m not the manager. He’s ready, Luke says he’s ready,” the Everton goalkeeper told the media after last night’s win.

“There will have to be changes with Marc Guehi suspended, but that’s what a 26-man squad is all about. Everyone’s got to be ready, and everyone is ready to play.”

Shaw may start for England when they take on Switzerland in the final eight of the competition this coming Saturday afternoon.
