JJ Gabriel handed Manchester United first-team training update after Rúben Amorim meeting and “brilliant” goals

Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel has been handed an update on his chances of first-team involvement following his brilliant performances with the U18s.

Manchester United have built a long-standing reputation for producing academy talent, with at least one graduate included in every matchday squad since October 26, 1937.

This season, U21 midfielders James Scanlon and Jack Fletcher, as well as others like Shea Lacey and Bendito Mantato, have already trained with the first team, but the standout prospect is 14-year-old JJ Gabriel.

Despite his age, Gabriel has quickly established himself in the U18s, marking his debut last season with two goals from the bench for Adam Lawrence’s side. Now under Darren Fletcher’s management, the youngster has retained that trust and is currently the side’s joint top-scorer.

Although the youth teams don’t mirror Rúben Amorim’s tactical setup, many academy followers believe Gabriel has the attributes to eventually become an ideal fit as a left-sided attacking midfielder in the Portuguese coach’s system.

Latest on Gabriel’s first-team involvement

Unfortunately for Gabriel, he is unable to participate in any formal senior matchday involvement this season due to his young age, but that has not stopped the club from making plans to accelerate his development.

According to MailSport, Gabriel is expected to join in with first-team training sessions later this campaign, having recently held a meeting with Amorim to map out his trajectory.

It is claimed that Amorim had been watching training footage of the young star while on pre-season tour with the first-team squad in the United States, with other reports suggesting that he was impressed with what he saw.

Bayern Munich and Barcelona have reportedly been tracking Gabriel for over five years, but will not be able to sign him until he turns 16 due to his Irish passport.

Youth minutes will be limited under Amorim

Unfortunately for those on the cusp of first-team action and senior debuts at United, the availability of minutes in Red has significantly dwindled compared to the last campaign.

United do not have any European football this season and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the second round, meaning there are no midweek fixtures for the side until they face West Ham at the beginning of December.

While cup competitions and European games were often used as excuses to hand the likes of Lacey and Chido Obi minutes with the senior side to help their development, the games for Amorim are strictly Premier League ties until they kick off their FA Cup pursuit in January 2026.

While there may have been scope for debuts in the Premier League for younger players, the first-team environment is also not entirely stable, meaning Amorim has been relying on his more senior players to bail United out of trouble when they are losing.

Even the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, a highly talented 20-year-old midfielder, cannot secure significant playing time. At the same time, 19-year-old Leny Yoro has been dropped in favour of Harry Maguire in the last two fixtures.
