Jason Wilcox names two Manchester United stars he is “very satisfied” with, Rúben Amorim will be surprised

Jason Wilcox has named two of Manchester United’s new signings that he is very satisfied with after their opening few months at Old Trafford.

Manchester United bolstered Rúben Amorim’s squad with four new first-team signings during the summer transfer window.

Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha were brought in to enhance the attack, while goalkeeper Senne Lammens signed on deadline day, and young left-back Diego Leon also joined the ranks.

In the opening few months, it has been Mbeumo who has had the greatest impact, scoring five goals and securing one assist, winning the club’s Player of the Month award for August and nominated for the October award, too.

However, Cunha, Šeško, and Lammens have all quickly become fan favourites in their own right.

Wilcox speaks on United’s four new signings

United’s summer spending eclipsed £200 million gross, with many coming to an agreement that the four new transfers are some of the best business the club have engaged in in years.

Mbeumo and Cunha came from other Premier League sides, so have adapted to the league quickly, but United sporting director Jason Wilcox was also keen to point out that Šeško and Lammens are two players the club are very satisfied with.

“Yeah the guys have settled in really, really quickly,” Wilcox told club media. “I think especially when you look at Matheus and Bryan, they have played in the Premier League and they have lived in England, so there is a quicker transition.

“I think for Benji and Senne, you look at their transition, and they have transitioned really well. We are very pleased. They are two young players, two for the future, but they have settled in amazingly well.

“They are all good guys, even from last summer’s window; they are top professionals, top players, and we are really optimistic we are going in the right direction.”

Not signings Amorim wanted, but ones he needed

It was well documented that after securing Cunha and Mbeumo, Amorim was very keen to continue buying from Premier League sides, and wanted Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa to fill his goalkeeper and striker slots.

However, the club ultimately went against his initial wishes and brought in 22-year-old Šeško and 23-year-old goalkeeper Lammens, with both players taking a little longer than the others to adapt to the league.

But, with both Šeško and Lammens now integral parts of Amorim’s starting XI, it is becoming very clear that these are two profiles that the United boss desperately needed. In Lammens’ case, the Portuguese boss even admitted that he had been surprised by the shot-stopper.

“I think a little bit because it’s hard in the moment of our club, all the speculation around the goalkeepers, he’s not a young kid but he’s still young,” the head coach said when asked if he has been surprised by Lammens’ impact.

“He coped really well with the pressure, he’s really composed, he’s defending really well. The importance of playing with both feet to kick the ball is so important nowadays, especially when you have to play against Liverpool in a more direct style.

“I’m a little bit surprised, but I was expecting a talented guy. But yes, a little bit surprised.”
