Jadon Sancho’s Man Utd rescue mission suffers stumbling block amid contract problems

Jadon Sancho is set to hold talks for a reunion with one of his former clubs as he leaves as a free agent.

Manchester United defeated Aston Villa 3-1 in the Premier League to reinforce the position in third as they go three points clear of Villa and five points clear of fifth-place Liverpool.

While Victor Lindelof marked his return to Old Trafford in the Villa squad, Jadon Sancho was unable to play in the fixture due to being a United loanee.

The Englishman made the move to the Birmingham side in the summer due to failing to progress talks to make his previous move to Chelsea permanent.

After a slow start under Unai Emery, the winger has become a starter of late, with rumours linking him to a move to Birmingham permanently.

Dortmund eye Sancho return

Borussia Dortmund and Sancho seem to be in a relationship that never seems to fade away.

Ever since his loan return to the German club in 2024 after a falling out with then-manager Erik ten Hag, Dortmund’s name has always been linked to Sancho.

With his reported £300,000 a week contract being too much for the club to handle, a move never made sense to materialise, hence loan deals to Chelsea and Aston Villa, who provided better financial formulas.

However, with his contract set to expire this summer and with an extension unlikely to be offered, talkSPORT have reported that the German side is open to a third reunion with the player to rescue from his torrid time in England.

For a move to go through, Dortmund would require Sancho to take a pay cut to make a move back to Germany.

More spending power for United

Despite the overall positivity around the Casemiro deal, with both the Brazilian and Sancho leaving, it marks the end of the previous era of signing big-name players on huge premium contracts.

An exit for both these players would open up over £600,000 a week. With the likes of Marcus Rashford, Tyrell Malacia, Altay Bayindir, Joshua Zirkzee and Manuel Ugarte all set to leave this summer, there could be a huge war chest in savings for the club to use.

This makes Champions League qualification all the more vital, as it would not only increase United’s spending power but also enhance the transfer appeal of the players.

If United want the likes of Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton, all the factors listed above would make United a much more likely destination than the club is currently.
