What Jadon Sancho told Erik ten Hag that influenced Man United to sign Antony
Jadon Sancho is unlikely to return to Manchester United after it was confirmed that Erik ten Hag will remain as manager.
Sancho, 24, was exiled by Ten Hag last season after his social media comments following the defeat to Arsenal in September.
The United winger was dropped from the squad, with the Dutch manager citing his training performances as the reason. Sancho labelled Ten Hag a liar and accused the 54-year-old of making him a scapegoat.
However, new information from a detailed article in The Athletic has revealed further information about the situation before Sancho departed for Borussia Dortmund on loan.
According to the report, Sancho did not commit to pressing as an “opposition” player in the practice match in the way Ten Hag wanted before the Arsenal fixture.
Sancho was then offered the chance to end his involvement early, which he took by walking off the pitch.
However, it was explained that Ten Hag’s patience had been stretched even at the start of his United tenure after his second game in charge against Brentford.
United lost that game 4-0, and the English winger started on the right flank. However, Sancho told the manager the club had bought the wrong player because his preference was to play on the left.
This message from Sancho guided Ten Hag’s decision to go for a player in that position in the remaining days of the transfer market. Antony was signed on 1 September for £85 million.
Antony and Sancho have both been as disappointing as each other on the Old Trafford pitch. The report mentioned that Ten Hag is “deeply disappointed” with the way that Antony’s signing has not worked out.
