“It’s very tough…” – Bruno Fernandes reveals the difficulties of playing for Manchester United after Chelsea win

Bruno Fernandes has revealed why it’s so difficult to play for Manchester United, despite being on the winning side on Saturday evening against Chelsea at Old Trafford.

After a very tough start to the season, Manchester United finally took victory at Old Trafford, with a 2-1 win over Alejandro Garnacho’s Chelsea.

Robert Sanchez’s red card – which was awarded for a poor challenge on Bryan Mbeumo – played a big part in the final scoreline, although United only had a man advantage for 40 minutes.

Casemiro was dismissed for a second yellow card just before the interval, but Rúben Amorim’s side showed character to hold onto their lead, despite a goal from Trevoh Chalobah late on.

Goals from the Brazilian and Bruno Fernandes led United to victory for just the second time in the Premier League this season. The Red Devils’ captain used the man advantage to full effect, often roaming into the final third to impact play.

Many have criticised the character of United players this season, but Amorim’s players did well to pull through, even if they had the benefit of an extra player for almost half the game.

Fernandes reveals how “tough” the United life is

After the game, Fernandes was asked about how difficult it is to play for United, amid the recent criticism of both the players and Amorim.

“It’s very tough for some players to become Manchester United players because this can be very heavy to come out of this tunnel and get out there,” said the captain after the Chelsea win.

“It’s a privilege for everyone and everyone is very proud to wear the shirt, but obviously it’s a big moment for everyone, so we need to get used to that and the expectation that this club has.

“Even if you don’t win for I don’t know how many years the Premier League, it doesn’t matter and doesn’t change anything. The aim is always the same because this is what the club demands.”

While he hasn’t always shown the necessary quality, Fernandes clearly understands what playing for United means. His character and love for the club can’t be questioned any longer.

Fernandes showed reason why Amorim needs to make a change

Fernandes started in the double pivot against Chelsea – as he has done in every game this season – but Sanchez’s red card changed his role for the better.

The United captain was allowed to push into the final third while United were on the ball, and wasn’t as crucial to the defensive shape when Chelsea were in possession.

Fernandes has always played his best football as an attacking midfielder, and Amorim needs to use the Portugal international from that position going forward.

Kobbie Mainoo could start in the double pivot alongside Manuel Ugarte or Casemiro, while Fernandes could play next to Mbeumo and Mathues Cunha.

While Benjamin Šeško settles into life in Manchester, Cunha could start as the striker, with Fernandes on the left and Mbeumo on the right. United would be better in and out of possession with this small change.
