Manchester United’s search for a new striker will go on after reports revealed that Rúben Amorim is unlikely to sanction a £44.8 million transfer.
Manchester United are preparing to overhaul their attacking options this summer after a disappointing 2024/25 campaign that ended with a 15th-place finish in the Premier League, largely due to a lack of goals.
Bruno Fernandes led the way with 19 goals, followed by Alejandro Garnacho and Amad with 11 each. Rasmus Højlund contributed 10, but no other player reached double figures across all competitions.
The club have already completed the £62.5 million signing of Matheus Cunha and remain in talks with Brentford over a deal for Bryan Mbeumo. Negotiations are progressing, with both sides working to finalise an agreement for the Cameroon international.
United are also in the market for a central striker, but two of their top targets appear to be off the table. Viktor Gyökeres is close to joining Arsenal after agreeing personal terms, while Victor Osimhen has committed to a return to Galatasaray.
With those options no longer available, United have shifted their focus to alternative names as they look to strengthen their frontline ahead of the new season.
United unlikely to sign Kean this summer
With United gathering a list of alternative striker options, one name who was on the club’s list is Fiorentina striker Moise Kean, who netted 25 goals last campaign.
Kean has a £44.8 million release clause in his contract that is only valid between 1st and 15th July, and had interest from United, Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, and elsewhere.
However, reports from last week detailed that United were now ‘unlikely’ to trigger Kean’s release clause, despite initially being tempted after they were offered the player.
United have also been linked with a possible move for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins. However, if this were to materialise, it would likely be toward the end of the summer window.
Kean speaks out on Fiorentina future
Amid United being unlikely to sign the Italian international this summer, Kean has spoken out on his future, stating that he is happy at Fiorentina.
“I am highly motivated to keep going here,” Kean told reporters, as relayed by Gianluca Di Marzio.
“Fiorentina gave me so much and always helped me out, now it is good for me to return for this new season with new motivation and ready to give my best for Fiorentina.”
If Kean stays at the Serie A side, he is likely to play at Old Trafford later this summer, with Fiorentina due to travel to face United in Manchester in their final pre-season fixture one week before the Premier League campaign kicks off.
United will face Arsenal on the opening weekend of the season as Amorim takes charge of his first full campaign as the club’s head coach.
