Ruben Amorim will have a boost over the international break after a national team boss made an interesting claim about one star.
Manchester United won their final Premier League fixture before the international break after a difficult start to the new campaign.
After a positive pre-season, the Reds lost to Arsenal on the opening weekend and only managed to draw away to Fulham in their second game.
Ruben Amorim’s side then were on the wrong end of a classic cup upset as they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup to League Two outfit Grimsby Town.
Victory against Burnley last weekend was crucial and United now wait until after the international break for their next fixture against Manchester City.
National team boss’ interesting claim about United star
Noussair Mazraoui returned to fitness against Burnley and made his first appearance of the season after suffering an injury setback in the summer.
The defender had a strong display off the bench and showcased why he was a consistent starter under Amorim last season.
Despite returning to the pitch, Morocco boss Walid Regragu has decided against calling Mazraoui up to the national team for their upcoming friendlies.
Regragui has interestingly explained that the United defender’s injury allows him to test out other options in a position which he says will be ‘competitive’.
“Mazraoui’s absence? Perhaps it’s for the best. During the periods he was out due to injury, I had the opportunity to try other players. Now El Karouani will return after a strong start to the season,” he said.
“There will be a lot of competitiveness at full-back. I won’t hide it from you.”
Mazraoui update gives Amorim boost
For United and Amorim, it is a boost that Morocco are not desperate to have Mazraoui back for these games as it allows him time at Carrington to get up to speed ahead of the return of club football later this month.
Amorim will be wanting to use this time wisely and Mazraoui could end up returning to the lineup in the coming weeks. It is useful to have him in the building.
The 27-year-old excels in the wide centre-back role, with his ball-playing abilities and link-up better than almost any other option there.
Leny Yoro could end up moving back to the left side, where he excelled last season, while Mazraoui joins him and Matthijs de Ligt in the backline. Many fans would argue that those three are United’s strongest back three.
