Italian giants ‘already preparing’ for life after 30-year-old star as Manchester United consider 2026 swoop

One of the Italian giants are ‘already preparing’ for life after their 30-year-old star, with Manchester United among the sides considering a transfer swoop in 2026.

In the summer transfer window, Manchester United were amongst England’s busiest outfits, with the Reds acquiring four new players, as well as offloading multiple of their want-away stars.

Ruben Amorim acquired three new attackers in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško for over £200 million, before attaining the services of 23-year-old shot-stopper Senne Lammens on deadline day.

United have had a mixed start to the campaign, with seven points from their opening five games in the Premier League, although the mood seems to be on the up after beating Chelsea 2-1 at the weekend.

Despite acquiring a new goalkeeper, Lammens has yet to feature in United colours, and the Red Devils could still be looking in the market for further competition between the sticks in 2026.

Maignan’s AC Milan future unclear

According to Calciomercato, via Manchester Evening News, AC Milan are ‘preparing for life’ after goalkeeper Mike Maignan, with the Frenchman out of contract next summer.

The 30-year-old shot-stopper was rumoured to be on his way out in the summer, with Chelsea heavily interested in his services, although this potential move never came to fruition.

TalkSPORT have supported these rumours by stating that United are ‘keeping tabs on Maignan’, with Amorim pushing for a more experienced number one than new signing Lammens.

This will be because the Reds let Andre Onana depart on a loan move at the end of the summer window, with his time at the club seemingly being over.

Is a goalkeeper a necessity?

Given the fact that United spent quite heavily in the summer, they may be fairly hesitant to splash the cash on signings that aren’t a set in stone necessity.

The Reds were rumoured to be in the market for a new midfield signing for the majority of the summer window, and this seems like the type of transfer that they will prioritise come January 2026.

One name in particular that United were linked with was Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, although a deal was deemed too expensive in the summer window.

Having just bought Lammens on deadline day, we will have to wait and see what the Belgian shot-stopper can provide for United, and if he is deemed a suitable candidate for the number one spot in the future.
