Rio Ferdinand has hit out at Paul Merson for his comments on Manchester United’s latest signing on loan Marcel Sabitzer.

The Austrian midfielder joined the club on loan from Bayern Munich on deadline day after confirmation that Christian Eriksen would be out of action for around three months with an ankle injury.

After moving to the Bundesliga champions from RB Leipzig in 2021, where he was one of the most impressive players in Germany, Sabitzer has not had the same impact for The Bavarians.

Merson, 54, labelled the deal as a ‘panic buy’ from The Reds and asked why United fans would want a player who is ‘nowhere near’ the Bayern Munich first team.

During his last two seasons with Leipzig, Sabitzer registered 25 goals and 18 assists and was a crucial part of the team’s success.

Ferdinand, who made 455 appearances for United, completely disagrees with the Arsenal legend and suggests that he has not even watched the player, who will be a great addition at Old Trafford.

“For me, those comments [from Paul Merson] stink of someone who hasn’t seen him play,” the former defender told his YouTube channel Vibe with FIVE. “This guy knows how to play football.

“I am absolutely delighted with [the signing], If I was trying to get a short-term replacement for Eriksen at the drop of a hat, Sabitzer is the player I would get.

“I watched a hell of a lot of this player when he was at RB Leipzig and he was sensational and integral to everything they did.

“Yes he’s gone to Bayern and hasn’t tore it up there or become a regular but the players he’s behind are big, household names.

“He will be a really good signing for Man United. He’s an experienced player who has played in big games, Champions League games.”

The Red Devils have confirmed that the 28-year-old midfielder will not be available to play against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday evening as he is still completing his visa process.

It was added that he is expected to be at Old Trafford in the stands to watch the game, with United hoping to reach the final of the Carabao Cup by progressing.

Sabitzer could come into the matchday squad to face Crystal Palace on the weekend.
