Following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, Danny Murphy has spoken about the possibility of Manchester United hiring a former legend for the role, labelling it as ‘crazy’.
Manchester United parted ways with their manager, Ruben Amorim, after he held an explosive press conference following a 1-1 draw at Leeds United.
The Portuguese manager had much to say regarding how the club operates, as well as highlighting a level of entitlement amongst the players.
Darren Fletcher has since taken over the Premier League outfit on a caretaker basis, with his first result on the touchline being a 2-2 draw at Turf Moor, against Burnley.
Following this result, the Reds are rumoured to be in talks with both Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjær about taking over as United manager for the remainder of the season.
Murphy slams Solskjær possibility
As reported by The Mirror, ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy spoke on Match of the Day to warn the Reds against the possibility of rehiring Solskjær, even on a temporary basis.
Murphy said, “Well the Solskjaer one coming back is crazy. I mean Man United paid him to leave because he ultimately failed and now they’re going to pay him to come back?
“I mean, it seems ridiculous when you’ve got options like Michael Carrick, Fletch obviously is a decent coach, and then you’ve got someone like [Roy] Keane, who the fans would love to come back. Ok, some people might think that might be chaotic, but he’s a leader.”
Former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor is also on a similar page to Murphy, as he told TalkSPORT that bringing the Norwegian back would be ’embarrassing’.
“It’s embarrassing. When I saw the news that Solskjaer might be coming back… It’s a laughing stock of a football club. The Manchester United fans were relieved when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got sacked. We’ve got receipts.”
Neville desperate to stop the cycle
Former United legend Gary Neville has also given his verdict on the possibility of United bringing in either Carrick or Solskjær as an interim, although he is desperate for his former club to break the cycle.
He said: “You almost go through cycles whereby, and United have done this for 12 years now. They put Ryan [Giggs] in charge ten years ago, then Ole took charge, and you go back to the old boys.
“Then you go for a new one, then you go for one more – it’s almost like a cycle and a movie that we’ve all seen before and Groundhog Day.
“They get the club. But still, they’re going to come under a lot of pressure in the next four or five months if results don’t go their way. So look, they have to be ready for that.
“Whoever’s going to get it, out of those three that are being mentioned, I wish them all the best because it’s a tough role.”
