Facundo Pellistri has sent an emotional message to a former Manchester United teammate after his latest career decision.

Pellistri, 22, spent the second half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Granada. The young winger joined United in the summer of 2020.

One of the players who helped him during his early years at Old Trafford was Edinson Cavani, who joined the club in the same transfer window.

The veteran goalscorer spent two years at the English club, the second of which was interrupted by injuries before his eventual exit. During his first season with the team, he quickly became a fan favourite.

Pellistri looked up to the Uruguay legend and has expressed his sadness at Cavani’s decision to now retire from international football.

The now-Boca Juniors forward has confirmed his international retirement at 37 years of age and he will not represent his country in the upcoming Copa America tournament.

The experienced centre-forward has made 136 appearances for his country and scored 58 goals. Only Luis Suarez (68) has netted more than the former United man.

Speaking on his former United teammate’s decision, Pellistri told ESPN: “On a personal level, it makes me sad. He is one of Uruguay’s greatest players, and for me he is someone with whom I have not only shared moments in the National Team, but also in Manchester United, he is a great friend.

“For Uruguay, he is a great loss, but at the same time, we are very happy with everything he did for the National Team. He will have his reasons for making that decision, but I stay with all the moments we shared together.

“I spoke with him about the challenges that lie ahead. He wished us a lot of luck, and I thanked him for all the moments we experienced.”
