Ian Wright has delivered the ultimate compliment to Kobbie Mainoo following Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
Manchester United claimed a deserved 2–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League clash at Old Trafford.
United began on the front foot, with Bryan Mbeumo threatening early, before Tottenham briefly found some rhythm. Michael Carrick’s side stayed organised at the back and gradually asserted themselves, with the turning point arriving late in the first half.
Cristian Romero was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Casemiro, leaving Spurs a man short. United quickly took advantage, producing an inventive corner routine that allowed Mbeumo to fire a low finish into the corner and give the hosts the lead before the break.
After half-time, United controlled the game, enjoying the majority of possession while Tottenham defended deep. Two United goals were chalked off for offside before Bruno Fernandes eventually made the breakthrough.
The captain connected perfectly with a powerful cross from Diogo Dalot, steering the ball into the bottom corner to seal the win and secure all three points.
Wright delivers the ultimate compliment to Mainoo
One of United’s best performing players on the weekend was Kobbie Mainoo, who assisted the opening goal and controlled things in the middle of the park.
Ian Wright was hugely complimentary of United’s display and also highlighted Mainoo’s impact on the game when speaking to the Premier League.
“I think the red card does make a difference, especially with the possession, but I don’t think it made a difference to the way they played, the energy, the way they were attacking,” the Arsenal legend began.
“Kobbie Mainoo really ran the game. It’s the kind of performance you’d expect from a Man Utd side that has these players in and around them.
“Michael Carrick’s come in and given them the belief, the formation that they’re comfortable in and with the quality players they’ve got, you will get the results.”
Mainoo can run games for United
Mainoo is not the type of midfielder who is going to get incredible numbers, like Bruno Fernandes, but he is one who can control games of football.
Wright claiming that Mainoo ‘ran the game’ versus Spurs is the ultimate compliment as that is exactly what the 20-year-old will be striving to do going forward.

Under Carrick, it seems clear that the youngster is getting on the ball as much as possible and he is growing into his role after every game.
It’s not always easy to find a midfielder who can dictate the tempo of matches but Mainoo is showing that he can provide that kind of quality for United.
