“I want to keep…” Ruben Amorim sends clear message to Jason Wilcox after Liverpool 2-2 Manchester United
Ruben Amorim has sent a message to Manchester United chief Jason Wilcox after the club’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool on the weekend.
Manchester United secured a 2-2 draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool in a gripping encounter at Anfield.
Lisandro Martínez opened the scoring for United early in the second half with a stunning strike, but Liverpool quickly equalised through Cody Gakpo.
A controversial VAR-awarded penalty, converted by Mo Salah, gave Liverpool the lead before Amad Diallo levelled for United.
Despite late drama, including a near-miss from Harry Maguire, the match ended all square and Ruben Amorim’s side could take many positives from the game.
Wilcox in charge of United transfer strategy
The positives from that clash do not take away from the improvements needed at Old Trafford, with the Reds still sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
In particular, Amorim is in desperate need of signings in the January transfer window, with a left wingback a necessity for the head coach.
Jason Wilcox is currently leading the club’s transfer strategy after Dan Ashworth’s recent departure and will be considering who United could sell to make space for signings.
Various players have been linked with exits this month, including Marcus Rashford, Joshua Zirkzee and Antony.
Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelöf could also depart for small fees before their contracts expire later this year, while reports claim Saudi Arabian clubs have interest in Casemiro.
Amorim sends Wilcox message about Zirkzee
However, it appears that Amorim’s preference is for Zirkzee to stay at the club and for Wilcox to generate funds elsewhere.
After United’s draw against Liverpool, the head coach stated that he wants to keep Zirkzee at the club but admitted that he doesn’t know what’s going to happen this month.
“I want to keep Josh [Zirkzee] because he gives everything and he’s trying in training but we don’t know,” Amorim told TalkSPORT.
“The window is open and we will see what happens. We just need to focus on training and to take this for the other games. It’s just one point so let’s focus on the performance for the next games.”
It is no surprise that Amorim wants to give Zirkzee more time, with multiple factors likely influencing this.
Zirkzee is only 23 years old and has had limited time to adjust to his new team and league, under two separate managers. He has also had a lot of game-time from the bench.
It makes sense for Wilcox and his team to look to try and raise funds elsewhere but Zirkzee does have interest from Italy and it could end up come down to who is generating actual interest for a transfer fee this month.
