Rio Ferdinand has given Manchester United’s new striker, Benjamin Šeško, his first challenge as a Red. Ole Gunnar Solskjær completely agrees with his point.
Manchester United’s summer recruitment has been very biased towards the attacking department of the squad, with all three senior signings so far being forwards.
First it was top target Matheus Cunha, then followed former Bee Bryan Mbeumo, and the most recent addition has been Slovenian star Benjamin Šeško.
Ruben Amorim’s side scored a disappointing 44 goals in the Premier League last campaign, which explains the decision to acquire a brand new front three to avoid similar shortcomings next campaign.
With Sesko coming in to replace Rasmus Højlund as the spearhead of United’s attack, many are hopeful that the 22-year-old can hit the ground running. Rio Ferdinand, however, wants to see one attribute from the former RB Leipzig man.
Ferdinand’s challenge for Šeško
The former United central defender has spoken on his YouTube channel about Šeško and his ability to score ‘outrageous’ goals, but even still, there is one thing Ferdinand wants to see.
Ferdinand said, “I think one of his strong points is that he’s not afraid to hit the ball from anywhere. If you’ve seen any clips of some of his goals, he scores some outrageous goals at times.
“But, I want to see some of them ugly goals as well, by the way. I want to see the goals where he’s running across the front post, where he’s being almost a decoy at times, just understanding that number nine’s nuances.
“I sound like a broken record, that takes me back to an older number nine coming in, and not having to be shown the ropes of what to do as a number nine.
“Someone who has experience of playing there and knows that when the chips are down and when things aren’t going well, what do I lean on? Experience, and knowing certain things to do and certain nuances of a striker.
Solskjær agrees entirely with Ferdinand
In 2020, former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær made a statement that heavily supports Ferdinand’s recent point about wanting a striker who scores ugly goals.
Speaking after a 1-0 win against rivals Manchester City, via 90 Min, the Norwegian manager mentioned the type of striker United needs, and how they need someone willing to ‘break their nose’ for a goal.
Solskjær said, “We need more goal scorers, we need more goals; that’s a definite. Need someone who wants to break their nose to score a goal or their toe, doesn’t have to be the nice ones, we know that.”
The importance of having a striker capable of scoring the ugly goals can’t be understated, and hopefully for United, they have finally found the man who can rid their previous goal-scoring woes.
