Ajax’s sporting director Alex Kroes has explained why the Dutch club will not be signing a former Manchester United player on a free transfer.
Manchester United managed to get most of their work done in the summer transfer window, with four major signings being made.
The additions of Senne Lammens, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško will hopefully improve Ruben Amorim’s side.
But it was also important for United to get several departures over the line and that eventually happened, with three done on deadline day.
The likes of Jadon Sancho, Antony, Rasmus Højlund, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho all departed on permanent transfers or loans.
United also saw the exits of Victor Lindelöf, Christian Eriksen and Jonny Evans from within the squad earlier this summer at the end of their contracts.
Sporting director explains why ex-United star won’t join
Lindelöf secured a deadline day switch to Aston Villa while Evans is now working in the loans department at Old Trafford.
Eriksen, however, is still without a club despite reported interest from various outfits over recent months and he will be desperately looking for a solution in the coming days.
His former club Ajax have always been touted as an option, and they have had a difficult start to the new Eredivisie campaign, with two draws in four games.
But still, Ajax’s sporting director Alex Kroes has explained why the club are not planning to bring Eriksen in as a free transfer.
“No, we have a lot of confidence in taking the next steps. Let’s all make sure that we work calmly and hard, and that we put the pieces together with a clear vision,” he said, as per tipsbladet.
“I understand the criticism, but we could not bring in all the players we wanted, as we also have to find a balance between financial and sporting interests.”
Eriksen still can be very useful
It is confusing to still see Eriksen without a club. Even last season, the Dane still made positive contributions for United when he was on the pitch.
He cannot dominate the midfield in terms of running power, that is obvious, but the physicality of the Premier League is a different beast and Eriksen would be valuable in other European leagues.

The 33-year-old has not lost his magic on the ball, and that is the most important thing for players like him, but Ajax is clearly not an option for him.
With the international break underway, and Eriksen not in the Denmark squad, he will be carefully considering his next move in the coming days.
