I noticed what Bruno Fernandes did after Cristiano Ronaldo scored for Portugal, it was brilliant leadership
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes helped Portugal win 2-1 over Scotland in their Nations League group clash this weekend.
Bruno Fernandes enjoyed a successful 30th birthday as he scored a long-range effort to equalise against The Scots after his former United teammate Scott McTominay put Portugal a goal behind.
That became the midfielder’s 22nd goal contribution for his country in his last 18 appearances. He is undoubtedly one of their most important players now.
United’s captain played the rest of the game, which Portugal won in the final minutes when Cristiano Ronaldo scored a clutch goal inside the box.
Ronaldo, initially left on the bench for the game, found a brilliant pocket of space and was expertly found by the cross of Nuno Mendes to tap the ball in and win the game for Portugal.
That leaves Portugal at the top of their Nations League group after two wins during this international break.
What Bruno Fernandes did after Cristiano Ronaldo’s winner
Bruno Fernandes might’ve not been directly involved in Ronaldo’s winner, but his immediate reaction after the goal provided a great display of his leadership.
Inside the box, as the ball hit the net, Fernandes did not follow Ronaldo for his iconic celebration at the corner flag; instead, he ran in the complete opposite direction.
Fernandes ran to celebrate with Mendes, who provided the pinpoint cross for the winner, before making his way to give Ronaldo a well-deserved hug as well.
Of course, these things seem small, and they are, but Fernandes always tries to motivate his teammates. We have often seen him push teammates ahead of himself to get applause at Old Trafford, such as Marcus Rashford or Alejandro Garnacho.
It also shows Fernandes’ appreciation for a great assist, something that he provided for Diogo Dalot only three days prior.
