“I know…” – Eric Cantona reveals one thing Ruben Amorim is “unhappy about” at Manchester United

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has given his views on Ruben Amorim’s poor start at the club, stating that it is unfair to judge him this season

On Sunday, Ruben Amorim’s side lost 4-1 away to Newcastle United in yet another poor performance. This defeat is the 14th in the Premier League this season, with six more games left to play, including games against Chelsea and Aston Villa.

Injuries to key players like Amad and Kobbie Mainoo haven’t helped United’s poor run of form, but the team’s performances mean the Red Devils are already guaranteed to finish with their lowest points total in Premier League history.

Despite how badly United have been, many believe that Amorim isn’t the man to blame. At every home and away game, you can always hear the fans singing “He’ll bring the glory days again…”.

Eric Cantona has also shared his views on United’s manager, stating that he believes Amorim is “unhappy” with the current first team squad.

Cantona backs Amorim for this season

Speaking in the build-up to United’s 0-0 draw with Manchester City, Cantona had his say on Amorim’s time at Old Trafford.

“We have to wait. He did great things at Lisbon and came in during the middle of the season, so he didn’t choose a player, I know he’s unhappy about the players.”

“So we have to wait until this summer. It will be more fair to judge him next season because he has to work with the players he didn’t choose.”

Cantona was later asked about his time at United, naming his favourite goal, “The goal I scored in the FA Cup Final against Liverpool because we won the double, with a new generation of players.”

“A golden generation of players and it was their first season. This is the identity of United for me, rich enough to buy the best players in the world, but also they work hard in the time of Sir Alex Ferguson and young players, so for me it was something that I achieved for the project of Ferguson.”

Amorim needs to succeed quickly

Despite fans and ex-players showing their support for the Portuguese manager, Amorim needs to turn United around quickly.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, several managers have had a good first season but have struggled in their second or third years and lost the support of the fans.

Even Erik ten Hag lost the faith of the fans after winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, after a poor start to the 2024/25 season.

While Amorim has support now, if he does not improve next season, some fans will quickly become unhappy and demand for change.
