“I felt…” – Mathys Tel breaks silence on why he joined Tottenham over Manchester United
Mathys Tel’s move to Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day was the most surprising story of the January transfer window after interest from Manchester United.
Manchester United secured the signings of Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven during the January transfer market.
The addition of Dorgu was crucial for Ruben Amorim’s team, who have been crying out for extra quality in the wingback position.
Meanwhile, Heaven could also have a more important role than initially anticipated following the ACL injury of Lisandro Martínez.
However, the club were unable to secure the signing of a forward despite sending Antony and Marcus Rashford on loan for the rest of the season.
Mathys Tel had reportedly agreed to join the club but United could not reach an agreement with Bayern Munich, with the Reds wanting a loan deal and option to buy the player.
Tel breaks silence on Spurs move
In the end, Tel joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan despite reportedly rejecting them as he preferred a move to Old Trafford.
Spurs managed to convince Bayern of a loan with an option to buy but only with a huge loan fee that would have likely been the cause of United’s negotiations with the German club breaking down.
After his move to North London was announced, Tel explained that his decision to join Tottenham came down to the “commitment” shown by Daniel Levy and Ange Postecoglou to sign him.
“Why I chose Tottenham? It was the best option for me,” the 19-year-old told Spurs’ club media team.
“I’m ready to play, I’m here, I’m ready to grow. It was the best option for me and now I’m very happy.
“I felt the commitment, I spoke with the President, the team manager, the coach and as I said, that was very important for me.”
United were right to avoid Tel deal
In the aftermath of this deal, a lot of United fans were frustrated but in the end it seems like they were right to avoid the deal.
Tel is not a definite hit and the high loan fee, alongside the fact that there is no guarantee that he would be a permanent signing, were warning signings to a deal.
United’s problem is the lack of depth in those forward areas but it seems like something the club are planning to wait until the summer to address.

In truth, there is not much to play for in the Premier League for the Reds now and all eggs should be put in the Europa League basket.
