Rúben Amorim has been handed a fresh verdict on the signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp as Manchester United’s goalkeeping woes continue.
Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation has been a subject of lengthy debate, with David de Gea and André Onana having made costly mistakes over the last six seasons.
De Gea was ousted by Erik ten Hag in 2023 and replaced by Onana. However, the Cameroon international has since moved on to Turkish club Trabzonspor after failing to impress Rúben Amorim.
The club then brought in Senne Lammens as a new shot-stopper, but it is Altay Bayındır who has taken the starting spot across the first six Premier League fixtures of the season.
United are yet to keep a clean sheet this campaign, having conceded 13 goals in seven games across all competitions, and Lammens is yet to make his debut despite signing one month ago.
Given perplexed by United’s goalkeeping decisions
While Lammens is touted as one of the most highly-rated young goalkeepers in Europe following his fantastic displays at Royal Antwerp, the club were also linked with experienced shot-stoppers in Gianluigi Donnarumma and Emiliano Martínez.
Despite the Lammens transfer, former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given has handed in a verdict that the position has not been properly addressed.
“The goalkeeper situation has not been addressed, they’ve signed that goalkeeper from Belgium and put him on the bench, I don’t understand that one,” Given noted on the Premier League Productions Weekend Wrap.
“Bayındır is not up to standard, and Onana has gone off now, so that’s a real key position that he hasn’t fixed.”
Wright calls for Amorim to start Heaton
Meanwhile, former Arsenal striker Ian Wright also weighed in on the argument, claiming that Amorim should consider starting veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
“We have seen no change, no improvement, no improvement from any player,” Wright mentioned on the same show.
“The goalkeeping situation, why don’t they give Tom Heaton a go? Whatever is going on, the Man Utd players aren’t getting it, they’re easy to beat, and if you stay solid, you can play through them.”

Heaton, of course, is very much employed as a dressing room figure at Old Trafford. He is a valued member of the leadership group under Amorim, but is ultimately not in contention to start Premier League fixtures for the club.
Heaton’s last competitive appearance for United came on 1 February 2023, when he kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup. He made two appearances that season, also earlier in the EFL Cup, and has only been a bench selection since.
